Zai Tang, SYN version 1.0 – work-in-progress showing at KIAC, Japan, 2026. Photo by bozzo. Courtesy of Kinosaki International Arts Centre.
SYN is a live audio-visual work inspired by the sonorous world of insects. The pulses, tones, textures, and rhythms of these often overlooked creatures coalesce to create a generative and ever-changing, visualised soundscape.
In this work-in-progress presentation, sound artist Zai Tang will be doing a short performance, followed by a talk and Q&A session.
SYN, a prefix that means “with” or “together”, is built on notions of being drawn from both Eastern and Western philosophy. During his talk, Zai will elucidate how ideas from Zen and psychoanalysis have nurtured his project’s development, as well as elaborate on how he developed his live audio-visual system.
SYN explores listening as a mode of attunement between the human and more-than-human realms. It aims to hold space for being with, so that we might recover the feeling of being part of the Earth and its myriad vibrations.

Zai Tang is an artist, composer and sound designer based in Singapore.
