OPEN END: Resonate, Re-Read and Re-Trace The Substation Archive

4 October 2024

Explore the legacy of Singapore’s first independent contemporary arts centre, The Substation, through the works of artists Urich Lau, Chong Li-Chuan, and curator Adrian Tan. OPEN END reactivates the often quiet Rotunda Library & Archive at National Gallery Singapore, with text-based compositions, video installations, and soundscapes that explore the power dynamics embedded in the archive’s materials.

Developed by Dr Adrian Tan and co-presented in conjunction with The Substation’s Gathering Ground 2024, this exhibition is presented by National Gallery Singapore and supported by the Platform Projects Curatorial Award overseen by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore.

Reaching its conclusion this year, the Platform Projects Curatorial Award has supported recent graduates from NTU ADM’s research-oriented MA and PhD programmes, such as the MA in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices (MA MSCP), in the realisation of their projects since 2020. An extension of their research and coursework, these projects investigate innovative and experimental forms of artistic and curatorial practices that explore the intersection of contemporary art’s present and its histories.

The Platform Projects Curatorial Award has been made possible by a generous donation from Platform Projects, a Singapore-based non-profit organisation that focused on enriching the practice, knowledge, and audience for contemporary art until its closure in 2017.
