Li Ran (b. 1986, China) currently lives and works in Beijing, China. Graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Oil Painting Department with BFA, he is both the initiator and participant of the Company project. In Li Ran’s works, he constantly performs the role of an imitator and gives himself over to encounters and bodily experiences. His repeated performance of various roles and events challenges the idea of the self while providing a perspective into the virtual nature of art itself. Li Ran has exhibited at the basis voor actuele kunst (BAK), Utrecht; Huas der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin, Germany; The Jewish Museum, New York, United States; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH), Houston; Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Montreal, Canada; The Museum of Moscow, Moscow, Russia; Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, Geneva, Switzerland; CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, United States; OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT), Shenzhen and Shanghai, China; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), Beijing, China; CAFA Museum (CAFAM), Beijing, China; and other venues. His works have also been featured in Montreal Biennale (2014), Biennale Of Moving Images 2014 (2014), 4th Moscow International Biennale for Young Art (2014), 2nd CAFAM Biennial (2014), 4th Former West Project (2013), 9th Gwangju Biennial (2012), 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale (2012).
Li Ran provides exhibitionary structures in which to look at wider dynamics of fabricated structures in narrative and history. In Beyond Geography (2012) he looks at the National Geographic style of the anthropological but with the caricature of the natives and anthropologist played by the same race. Li has also looked at the idea of re using elements from projects and what it means to re contextualising work to comment on the circulation of cultures bringing to attention forms of mis/communication. For his research, Li will work closely with Singapore Management University faculty Rowan Wang to understand the dissemination of protestant ideals in Singapore, not only through the lens of theology, but as a form of ideological management. Li will build an open platform, re purposing works and structures from past work, incorportated into an interviewing structure.
This edition of Residencies: OPEN will highlight NTU CCA Singapore’s Artists-in-Residence who focus on performance in their practices. The performances will take place outside Block 37 Studios, accompanied by activities happening within this remote block. Performances will range from live sonic hypnosis from Yan Jun, a collaborative performance from anGie seah looking at the sensation of “butterflies in the stomach”, a ceremonious ritual of conviviality with Amanda Heng and a special installation and screening of work by Li Ran. These four artists mutually share an interest in performance as a visceral medium to experience contemporary art.

Through her exchange of everyday rituals with various people in September, Amanda Heng’s (Singapore) presentation looks at the meditative, poetic and performative qualities in ceremonies, everyday life and public spaces. Visitors will be invited to experience the exchange of rituals through participation.

Li Ran (China) presents two works that blur everyday life and performance, including Beyond Geography (2012), which looks at the role of performing the “native” within a fabricated jungle environment.

Yan Jun’s (China) performances often incorporate improvisations and everyday objects. He will create a sonic device based on his experimentation of being situated in the jungle, drawing attention to the environs of Block 37, Gillman Barracks.

anGie seah (Singapore) will present Part 1 of A Thousand Horses Running in my Head (2015), a mash up of bass droning, poetic gestures and erratic voice-works combined with everyday sounds.
Unfolding over two months, Artists-in-Residence Li Ran and Gary Ross Pastrana will develop projects for The Lab, NTU CCA Singapore’s space for experimentation, which are speculations on how an image is created and deconstructed.
Gary Ross Pastrana’s An ASEAN Exhibition 1 creates an artistic gesture around the idea of Southeast Asia as a reference with no visual referent. The artist engaged DSM Solutions, a young Singaporean creative collective, to stage a “Contemporary Southeast Asia Art Exhibition-Themed Event” and prototype props that could stand in for Southeast Asian artworks. In this manner, the artist has effectively outsourced the sometimes-problematic task of representing Southeast Asia, an implied obligation of artists invited to regionally themed group exhibitions within the region.
Li Ran presents a new project Waiting for the Fog to Drift Away, a collaboration with Singapore Management University (SMU), Assistant Professor Rowan Wang, a specialist in overall planning science. Li Ran will conduct interviews to gain planning advice from Wang in an attempt to define the most successful trajectory for the life of an artist as a business enterprise, estimating production levels and peaks and troughs in key life moments.

He has exhibited widely including the 1st Pierre Huber Prize Annual Exhibition of Emerging Media Artists, OCAT Shanghai.
Gary-Ross Pastrana lives and works in Manila, The Philippines. He recently held a solo exhibition at the Vargas Museum in Manila and is one of the co-founders of Future Prospects Art Space in Cubao. Pastrana has regularly curated shows both in The Philippines and abroad.
