Dr Marc Glöde

Biography

Dr Marc Glöde is an independent curator, critic and film scholar. He studied film studies, comparative literature and Dutch philology at the Free University in Berlin where he also received his PhD. Dr Glöde has curated numerous exhibitions and film programmes since the mid-1990s, and was the curator of Art Basel Film (2008-2014), and the curator/senior advisor of the abc Berlin (2010-2012). Previously, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department for Architecture at the ETH Zürich as well as a research fellow at the Heinrich-Heine-University, Düsseldorf.

Research focus

Residency period: 25 February – 26 May 2016

Dr Marc Glöde's work is informed by his interest in questions concerning images and image politics, as well as the correspondences between different artistic disciplines or cultural positions. For his research at NTU CCA Singapore he will specifically address the dynamics of the relation between images and the development of urban ideas and architecture – on the impact of images on a critical reflection of urbanism.
By re-visiting the landmark project “Cities on the Move” almost 20 years after its occurrence, one of the key questions will be how this exhibition/debate has left its imprint on the discussion in Asia and how the situation has developed since then. From there Dr Glöde's research will dig deeper into the impact of artists, filmmakers, and curators on the discussion. Dr Glöde's research will be accompanied by a combination of workshops, film screenings, and discussions with artists and architects from the region.

Assuming that a curator can be the artist, collector, writer and producer at the same time, one poses questions like why and what do we curate when we curate? Curator Li Zhenhua considers curating a temporary position in the arts, bringing together different approaches to artists’ works providing new points of entry through different forms of inquiry and research. The lecture and screening will be followed by a conversation between Li Zhenhua and NTU CCA Singapore Visiting Research Fellow Dr. Marc Glöde.

Li Zhenhua has been active in the artistic field since 1996, his practice mainly concerns curation, art creation and project management. Since 2010, he has been the nominator for the Summer Academy at the Zentrum Paul Klee Bern (Switzerland), as well as for The Prix Pictet (Switzerland). He is a member of the international advisory board for the exhibition “Digital Revolution” at the Barbican Centre in the United Kingdom in 2014, as well as Videotage and Symbiotica in 2015.

Expanding Filmic Spaces – Modifications in the Perception of Filmic Spatiality
Workshop and Screening of selected films by DrMarc Glöde (Germany), Visiting Research Fellow and film scholar
Friday, 22 April 2016, 7.30 – 9.00pm
Saturday, 23 April 2016, 1.00 – 4.00pm

When Sheldon Renan and Gene Youngblood at the end oft he 1960s coined the term Expanded Cinema, they were interested in a revision of the cinematic conventions. Addressing specifically questions concerning the spaces of film (the imaginary spaces, the depicted spaces, as well as the architectural environments) made clear what kind of impact the cinematic apparatus had on our ways of watching films. Artists and critics began to critically approach the environment and technology of the filmic experience and ask how this assemblage was influencing our perception and our ways of thinking.

The screening and workshop Expanding Cinematic Spaces by Visiting Research Fellow Marc Glöde will take a closer look at this development – its historic implications as well as its relevance for today. It will combine some outstanding artistic film works with remarkable examples that offered different spatial experiences.
